FINI is a huge success
The data is in. A new report shows that right out of the gate, federally funded nutrition incentives have been enormously impactful. Wholesome Wave advocated for FINI – shorthand for the USDA’s Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive program – an innovative grant program that will provide $100 million to nutrition incentive projects over five years. Wholesome Wave was awarded FINI grants to expand nutrition incentive programs at farmers markets, grocery stores and corner stores in 18 states & DC.
The report, written by the Farmers Market Coalition with support from Wholesome Wave, shows that in just year one, FINI funds supported incentive programs at almost 1,000 farmers markets nationwide, boosting sales to 4,000 farmers in 27 states. FINI-funded purchases resulted in approximately up to 32 million additional servings of fruits and vegetables for SNAP households. “It's rare," said the report’s author, Ben Feldman, "to see a program work as comprehensively as FINI does for Americans."
